Are you selling your vehicle?

What to do before selling your car to a private individual? If you wish to part with your vehicle, you will need to prepare it in advance. We offer you a guide in several steps to assist you as best as possible in the preparation of your car.

Preparing to sell your car is not insignificant.

From fixing the price to the administrative procedures, including the necessary maintenance of the car, leave nothing to chance to conclude a good sale.

Set the price of your vehicle

You have made the decision to sell your vehicle to an individual, but do not know at what price to offer it to potential buyers? In order to optimize the sale of your car, you must set a selling price that is neither too high nor too low. To do this, find out about used car sales sites to see the rating for your car. The price will also be based on its mileage, age and the different options present.

The Argus rating is therefore a good indicator for most vehicles.

Clean and maintain your used car

Preparing for the sale of your car also involves its complete maintenance. There is no obligation to clean your vehicle, but to make a good sale, you will have to go through the cleaning of the interior and exterior of your car. Indeed, a dirty vehicle in poor condition will cause you to lose money and a sale that will certainly take longer.

Here are some helpful tips to properly prepare your car for sale:

Bring our cleaning products and our renovation kits.

  • Vacuum and shampoo, especially carpets and seats;

  • Dust all the elements of the passenger compartment;

  • Clean the windows;

  • Wash the exterior of your vehicle with a wax finish, buff or polish.

  • Renovate the rims if they are damaged thanks to our rim renovation kit for a perfect result

  • Renovate scratched plastics

  • Check the fabric for holes or tears

  • Check if the leather is not worn or damaged

  • Check the headlight lenses

  • Check for scratches on the bodywork

If you have just acquired a new vehicle, we strongly advise you to protect the entire bodywork with our ceramic treatment kit and we strongly advise you not to clean your vehicle with a roller, which could damage your vehicle as well as the rims. Whether your vehicle is new or not, we do not recommend it. If your vehicle has defects (micro-scratches or other) you must polish the bodywork.

In addition, have your maintenance book up to date to reassure the buyer as to your seriousness. Check your car before any transfer of your vehicle in order to carry out the oil change or restore the brakes.

Carry out the technical check

If your car is over 4 years old, you must have the technical inspection of the second-hand vehicle carried out in one of the approved centres. Indeed, a technical control certificate will be given to you after having carried out the control. This document is necessary for the sale of any vehicle over 4 years old. It must be dated less than six months at the time of the sale and will allow the buyer to obtain a new gray card in his name. On the other hand, if the purchaser is not an individual, but a professional, the certificate is not compulsory.

What documents to sell a car?

Several documents must be provided to the buyer before handing over the keys to the car. These documents are:

  • The transfer certificate;

  • The certificate of administrative status;

  • The registration certificate or gray card;

  • The technical inspection certificate, which we have already discussed in the previous paragraph.

The transfer certificate

The used vehicle transfer certificate is a document that must be completed by the seller and the buyer. Its purpose is to inform the administration of the transfer of the vehicle. This is the CERFA 15776 form, available here. This paper is to be downloaded in two copies, one for the seller and one for the new buyer. Everyone must complete the parts concerning them, then sign both copies. Since 2017, it is no longer possible to send the certificate of sale to your prefecture by post. The declaration of transfer is made only online on the ANTS website or through an approved partner,  Read this article to learn more.

The certificate of administrative status

This second document, also called a non-pledge certificate, assures the buyer that the vehicle is not pledged. This means that the seller is authorized to sell it and that there is no opposition to its sale. This procedure can also be done using the ANTS website, or by HistoVec. So remember to do it when preparing your car for sale.

The registration certificate

Finally, you must provide your buyer with the vehicle registration certificate, formerly called gray card. The former owner must mark the words "Sold on" or "Ceded on" at the top of the document. The date and time of the transfer must also be mentioned. All you have to do then is add your signature.

The main thing to remember

To properly prepare for the sale of your car, think about:

  • Correctly assess the price of your car;

  • Carry out the verification and overhaul of the passenger compartment and the exterior;

  • Carry out the technical control;

  • Prepare supporting documents.
